MOTHER OF PEARL

Mother of Pearl is the iridescent protective coating on the inside of Mollusc shells such as Freshwater Mussels, Abalone and Pearl Oysters. It is made from Nacre, the same material as Pearls which are much rarer because they are only formed, when a foreign body enters the shell and nacre is produced to coat it and protect the mollusc. Mother of Pearl has been used in Jewellery making for years because of its beautiful quality.
